SEO Optimization

SEO optimization – the way to get organic visibility on the first page of search engine results

SEO optimization is the only way to get visibility or organic exposure on the first page or in the top 10 search engine results.

This way involves a very complex process, advanced technical SEO knowledge, business knowledge in the smallest detail, creativity, reasearch and analysis, hard work and patience.

Why is it important to be visible in the top 10 Google results?

  • 93% of online experiences start on a search engine
  • 68% of these online experiences happen on the Google search engine, and in Romania over 95% of users use Google
  • Most Google users only visit the first page of results (91.5%)
  • 74% of those who visit the first Google page (top 10 Google organic results) actually click on the top 5 results: position 1 – 32%, position 2 – 17%, position 3 – 11%, position 4 – 8%, position 5 – 6%
  • Maximise the chances of increasing organic non brand traffic to the website and over time brand and direct traffic.

What exactly happened then? Initially, webmasters would submit the web page or URL to search engines, which would search through the website to identify and extract links to other pages and return the information from the web page for indexing. Depending on the type of information, the keywords identified, their distribution and the proportion in which they were used, a ranking of rankings was produced. This was when website owners began to understand and recognise the value of good rankings and higher search engine visibility, which turned into opportunities for SEO practitioners/specialists.

Briefly defined, SEO or Search Engine Optimization, is a subcategory of online marketing – SEM, which is a process involving a multitude of techniques by which a web page can be brought into proper shape in terms of search engine requirements, thereby increasing its chances of being propelled to the top results. This boost in the top results is achieved through user searches for certain keywords or phrases and the degree of SEO optimisation covered by those websites according to search engine requirements.

The most important SEO ranking factors

The actions that are included in the SEO optimization process of a website are, to a large extent, closely related to the requirements/rules imposed by search engines.

From here, the latest data on the most used search engines globally, looks like this:

  • Google – 92.06%
  • Bing – 2.61%
  • Yahoo! – 1.79%
  • Baidu – 1.16%
  • Yandex – 0.56%
  • Yandex RU – 0.52%

In Romania, Google is used by over 95% of users, which determines the need for SEO optimization of websites in terms of Google factors.

Google has informed us over the years that the results in the SERPs are based on at least 200 ranking factors, which are constantly changing depending on user behaviour or experience. For this reason, we are very often greeted with changes, the so-called Google updates. Even though there are many of them, and they are only a short time apart, most of them are minor; updates with a major impact are made at longer intervals.

As it is known, Google doesn’t tell us much, which is why we need to be always connected to the news about SEO, to do a lot of research, analysis and data comparisons, interpretations and implementations, so that we can keep up with these minor changes and updates, so that when the major updates come, we don’t suffer losses or disastrous fluctuations in rankings, which will clearly negatively impact organic traffic.

  • Content (keyword-focused text + media content: photos, videos, etc.)
  • Relevant links received from other sites (backlinks)
  • RankBrain – artificial intelligence-based system designed to return results more relevant to users’ search intent, beyond the exact keywords used in searches

Other ranking factors deduced from Google’s communications on website quality are:

  • site loading speed
  • optimisation for mobile devices
  • presence of HTTPS secure connection
  • “engagement” (user interaction with the site)

Another factor that we suspect and has been discussed is the role of social signals (e.g. social media activity: Facebook, Instagram, Linkedin, etc).

The main steps in an SEO optimization process

The first step in a website SEO optimization process is to set the goals we want to achieve. This is true whenever we build a marketing strategy – each promotion channel and each type of campaign should have realistic goals set and in line with the type of campaign that has been chosen.

SEO goals can differ from business to business, not in terms of their values, but just in terms of the types of goals. Therefore, some examples of SEO goals that should exist set within an SEO campaign would be:

  • Increase organic visibility (increase website ranking)
  • Increasing organic traffic – which often generates other types of objectives, such as: identifying and increasing the potential market
  • Increased direct traffic – when analysing the significant increase in organic traffic and the significant increase in direct traffic, it can be deduced that through an increase in the visibility of the site, traffic has increased, the brand has been strengthened, it has become known, and this has led to an increase in direct traffic
  • Increased site authority – site authority is a score that predicts how likely a site is to rank in the top search engine results for targeted keywords. In SEO terms it is called DA and is calculated on a scale of 1 to 100
  • Increased conversion rate – conversions can be different from site to site – examples of conversions: completed orders, sending contact form/offer request, clicking on phone number, etc.)
  • Increase the values of other KPI’s (Key Performance Indicator), such as: click rate, number of views, bounce rate, number of sessions, number of new users, etc
Once we have established our SEO goals, we need to carry out a complete SEO audit including: a very detailed website analysis, an Off-Page SEO analysis and a competition analysis.

On-Page SEO Analysis or On-Page SEO Audit must take into account many SEO elements. We list just a few of them: indexability, site architecture, keyword research, URL structure, duplicate content, meta tags, sitemap, loading speed, etc.

Off-Page SEO Analysis should look at: analysis of external link profile (backlinks), dofollow vs. nofollow link ratio, anchors used, analysis of competitor link profile, etc.

Competition Analysis must be carried out from several perspectives, namely: in terms of targeted/targeted keywords, its positioning in relation to our website, the content on the website in relation to ours, identification of differentiating points, etc.

Implementing the recommendations resulting from the On-Page / On-Site SEO audit is paramount, as it directly addresses On-Page optimization, and will ensure that the site meets Google’s requirements. The other actions in the SEO optimization process, in order to be effective and return visible results, must be carried out when we have a healthy and Google compliant website.

Once we have set SEO goals, conducted SEO audits and implemented the resulting recommendations, know our competition and how we are doing in terms of SEO relative to our competitors, the actual or monthly SEO campaign can begin.

The monthly SEO campaign should include the following 4 main areas:

  • Technical
  • Content writing
  • Linkbuilding
  • Account management

The number of websites has grown dramatically since 1991, reaching 1.71 billion at the end of 2019, peaking in 2017 – 1.76 billion websites.

In this context, we can say that it is mandatory to be in the first Google results if we want our website to be visited by potential customers and really help us. What we mean is that it is no longer enough just to have a website if it does not have visibility, a higher ranking in Google rankings, in fact, we can even say that it is as if we did not have it.

SEO optimization of websites generates a number of benefits on both online results and business processes:
